After ports Authority was formed in 1979 it revealed the necessity of establishing a fully equipped Training Institute to undertake skill manpower requirements in all aspects of the port in compliance with the port developments taken place in transforming the Colombo Port in to a Leading container Pivot Port in the region. SLPA-Mahapola Training Institute which was built in 5.5 acres of land with approximate cost of Rs. 45 million was declared open in 1987. The UNCTAD\ILO has also assisted through the UNDP project to the value of US $665,929 in the form of consultancy, equipment and training of trainers.

The training institute annually calls for training requirements from all the Divisions and sections of SLPA. Based on the training needs forwarded by the divisions and sections of Authority and the other user organizations the training staff develop and deliver training courses and arrange Workshops Seminars with the recourse personnel drawn from the line departments and also from outside organizations on specialist subjects.
|The curriculum development unit of the Institute is assisting the training streams to develop their training programs, Workshops and Seminars and also provide the necessary visual aids, final evaluation of courses and reservations of training facilities. In addition to the course development activities examinations for the promotions and recruitment of employees of SLPA are also conducted by the CD Unit.|
