Colombo, Tuticorin ferry service to be revived

Colombo, Tuticorin ferry service to be revived

Sri Lanka will once again speak to the Indian government in a bid to renew the Colombo,Tuticorin (India) ferry service, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister, Arjuna Ranatunge said.

Speaking at the Ceylon Shipping Corporation's 44th anniversary, he said the shipping service could offer numerous benefits to passengers and traders of both countries. He said that this proposal will once again be discussed with the new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jeyaram.

President Maithripala Sirisena's and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mediation too will be sought in this regard. The new plan is to use the Kankesanthurai (KKS) harbour for this operation.

Ranatunge also spelled out his future plans for the Shipping Corporation which includes the buying of two ships and making the institution profitable.

Meanwhile the Shipping industry sources said that they very much welcomed a ferry service between the two countries. With the train now operating to KKS, this idea has a lot of economic value.

The high airfare between Colombo and Chennai which is over Rs. 22,000 will be another attraction to commence this service. He said that the previous Colombo -Tuticorin ferry service failed mainly because it was not marketed.
