Arjuna promotes open dialogue to address ports, maritime and shipping issues

Arjuna promotes open dialogue to address ports, maritime and shipping issues

An open dialogue should be held to address issues in the ports, maritime and shipping sector, Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said.

The minister was addressing the first meeting of the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee on Ports, Shipping and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry Auditorium on Tuesday.

Minister Ranatunga said the issues relating to ports, shipping and maritime should be solved promptly, aiming to have smooth function of the sector.

The minister stressed the need of an open discussion to provide solutions to ports and maritime sector issues.

All information, regulations and policies in the sector should be updated to meet the requirements of the sector, he said. The Inter-Agency Coordination Committee on Ports, Shipping and Maritime Affairs has been established by a Cabinet Act.

The committee aims to formulate and review policies, programmes and projects relating to the Ports, Shipping and Maritime sector. Consultancy coordination between the stake holders of the sector falls under the portfolio of the ministry, he said. “Our first meeting was a success. The committee would provide us a platform to discuss inter-agency issues and take solutions.

We hope to assemble once a month. We can discuss our problems at the meeting and provide quick solutions to them," Minister Ranatunga said.
